Professional Background and Experience
I am Titusz Bogdándy, a certified restorer, and I have been working in the field of conservation and restoration of polychrome and carved wooden objects since 2000. I earned my degree from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, specializing in the restoration of wooden sculptures. My career has led me from the Hungarian National Heritage Institute through independent practice in Hungary and Austria to my current position as a project manager at Kopp Restauratoren GmbH in Vienna.
With over 25 years of professional experience, I primarily dedicate myself to the preservation of church furnishings, altars, and historical interiors in palaces and listed buildings.
Artistic Philosophy: Nature and Intervention
In my independent artistic work, I seek a balance between naturally grown forms and deliberate artistic intervention. For me, wood is an archaic material representing a deep connection between the organic world and human creative power. My method is based on respect for the medium: I do not attempt to dominate the wood, but rather to take up its natural growth patterns and structures, transforming them into a new, sculptural form.
Technology and Method
A holistic approach, which is indispensable in monument preservation, also shapes my sculptural work. I integrate centuries-old restoration techniques – such as classical gilding or specialized surface treatments – into my contemporary pieces. The conscious use of contrasts, such as the tension between raw bark and finely polished interior surfaces or the combination of warm wood with cool stone pedestals, gives my sculptures their distinctive character. My goal is to make the hidden aesthetics of the material visible through technical precision and artistic vision.
