Schönbrunn Palace – Porzellanzimmer (Porcelain Room)

← To project overview

An intimate interior of Schönbrunn Palace that served as the former private study of Empress Maria Theresa. The interior design follows the contemporary Chinoiserie taste and is characterized by blue-and-white polychrome wooden frame panels reminiscent of porcelain. Despite the name Porzellanzimmer (Porcelain Room), the decor is not made of real porcelain but of carved and hand-painted wood, representing a high-quality imitation of porcelain and lending the room its elegant, unique character.

Restoration measures: Multi-stage cleaning, conservation, and structural consolidation of the wall paneling and frames. Removal of earlier, non-original fillings and inauthentic overpaintings, as well as extensive formal additions and reconstructions on the polychrome wooden elements. Finally, a finely tuned retouching was carried out to restore the visual unity of the porcelain imitation.
