Josephinum Vienna – Restoration of exhibition furniture and interior fittings

← To project overview

The restoration work carried out at the Josephinum – the Museum of Medical History Vienna – involved the exhibition rooms of a late 18th-century Neoclassical university building and focused on polychrome wooden furniture and integrated interior fittings. The aim of the measures was to preserve the historic substance and ensure the structural stability required for museum operations.

Regarding the white-painted furniture, existing layers of paint were consolidated, damaged areas were filled, and the surfaces were subsequently repainted using oil-based paint. The timber constructions were structurally reinforced and – where necessary – supplemented or slightly adjusted to meet the functional requirements of the exhibition space.

Due to budgetary constraints, a full exposure of the original white-and-green polychromy could not be performed; however, the stratigraphic sequence was exposed on a single sample object for study and documentation purposes. Additionally, one of the glazed display cases underwent partial restoration treatment.
